Description: Edward Sheriff Curtis (1868–1952) was an American photographer and ethnologist known for his extensive documentation of Native American cultures in the early 20th century. Curtis dedicated much of his career to capturing the lives, traditions, and ceremonies of various Native American tribes. Curtis began his ambitious project, "The North American Indian," in 1906, with the intention of creating a comprehensive photographic and ethnographic record of Native American cultures. Over the course of several decades, Curtis traveled extensively, visiting and photographing more than 80 different tribes. His work included portraits, landscapes, and depictions of daily life, ceremonies, and rituals. "The North American Indian" project consisted of a multi-volume set of books accompanied by large portfolios of photogravures.
