Description: This is the two-volume set of "In Darkest Africa, or the Quest, Rescue and Retreat of Emin, Governor of Equatoria'' by Henry Stanley and published in 1891 by Charles Scribner's Sons. Stanley organized and led the 1887-89 expedition sent to rescue Emin Pasha at Wadelai on the left bank of the Nile. The German naturalist, whose real name was Eduard Schnitzer, had been appointed by Gordon to the governorship of the equatorial province, and was believed to be in grave danger following the fall of Khartoum. The route taken was from the west coast across the whole extent of the Congo State to the Nile, partly through dense tropical forest. Plagued by disease, hardship, mutiny and poor organization, the expedition lost two-thirds of its original number, and Emin, who had reluctantly agreed to come away with Stanley, transferred himself to the German service, leaving Stanley to come home without him. Although he failed in his primary objective, Stanley made important geographical and ethnological discoveries. During the course of his journey he found the great snow-capped range of Ruwenzori, the Mountains of the Moon, as well as a new lake which he named the Albert Edward Nyanza, and a large south-western extension of Lake Victoria. The treaties which he concluded with various native chiefs and transferred to Sir William Mackinnon's company, laid the foundation of the British East Africa Protectorate. Each hardcover volume measures 6 1/4 by 9 inches. Volume I contains 547 pages, while Volume II contains 540 pages including an index. The set is illustrated with steel engravings and 150 illustrations and maps. The boards are green cloth with gilt lettering on the fronts and spines, a facsimile of the author's signature on the fronts and an outline depiction of African on the fronts. The condition is not perfect, as the opening bid reflects. The boards show wear and compromised cloth. The boards and first three free endpapers on Volume I are not affixed to the text block, and the text block is quite shaken. The boards of Volume II are not securely affixed to the text block, and the first free endpapers, frontispiece and half title page are missing. Two full-color maps are present. The ''Map of Route of Emin Pasha Relief Expedition Through Africa'' measures 28 by 18 inches. One panel is torn, and three panels are detached. The ''Map of the Great Forest Region Showing the Routes of the Emin Pasha Relief Expedition from the River Congo to the Victoria Nyanza by Henry M. Stanley'' measures 24 by 32 inches. The left quarter is detached from the rest of the map, which shows chipping and wear. Both maps would look nice framed. We offer this item with no reserve, and we gladly combine shipping.
