Description: This Asmat carved wood sago-plate shield is from Irian Jaya, Casuarina Coast, Papua. The New Guinea island is home to numerous indigenous tribes, cultures and unwritten languages. If you are viewing my item that means you have knowledge of these things. You can search the web for current information regarding the Asmat peoples. This shield we acquired in the 1980's, comes from a non-smoking home, is in original condition as when purchased. Being a human created artifact, the Asmat artisan utilized wood and decorative materials readily available to him. If the wood specimen is a thick enough piece, the shield also dubs as a "plate" for sago, grubs, vegetables, and the like. Sized at 32" tall by 18" wide. Hung on a wall it becomes an impressive talking point. View my pictures, ask questions, bid to own it. WYSWYG
