In the 1950s, films and TV were the chief instructors for our behavioral norms. We were taught how to date, how to kiss, how to behave in a variety of ways. Today, television especially, continues this 'good' work as we are given templates for behavior towards our spouse, our parents, our peers, and our children. This particular DVD is a collection of films that cover devastating diseases, how to avoid them, and the consequences of getting them. Shown on televisions and health classes across the country, these diseases made the generation afraid to kiss and hold hands. Vaccines were still in their infancy at the time, and these films were released to educate the public on the various diseases out there, and what you can do to protect yourself. Sometimes humorous given today's standards, yet still informative and educational, and of high cultural significance. This DVD runs about 2 and a half hours and has a fully interactive menu. A list of films is as follows: Health Your Cleanliness (1953) Importance of cleanliness in fields of science & medicine as protection against disease. Washing hands, bathing, showers, brushing teeth & hair, care of skin, eating proper foods, drinking water, caring for clothes as desirable habits. Sound, B&W, 11:42 Immunization (2nd Ed) (1955) Explains what immunization is and how it is built up either by having a disease or by being inoculated with vaccine. Shows how smallpox vaccine is produced and used and how diphtheria toxins are treated to produce toxoids. Sound, B&W, 9:21 Joan Avoids a Cold (1947) How young children must behave to avoid transmitting germs to one another. Sound, B&W, 10:25 On the Firing Line (ca. 1936) Efforts being made by the National Tuberculosis Association in the war against tuberculosis, with many interesting scenes from the 1930s. Posing interesting and still relevant statistics linking poverty to the disease as well as surprising breakdowns on the racial demographics of tuberculosis victims, the film also includes fascinating footage of early sanitoria (treatment centers) and mobile health clinics. Sound, B&W, 19:13 Outbreak of Salmonella Infection (1954) Studies a simulated outbreak of food-borne illness caused by organisms of the salmonella group. Examines source and means of contamination, factors aiding the survival and transfer of the organism, conditions of environment and general food handling practices, and effects of the outbreak. Sound, Color, 12:43 To the People of the United States 1944 Public education film on combating the epidemic of sexually transmitted diseases, especially syphilis, in World War II. Jean Hersholt, the great humanitarian and character actor hosts this 1944 public information film about stopping venereal diseases. Bit parts are played by Robert Mitchum and Noah Beery, as well as many other recognizable actors of the that time. For the audience of that era, it effectively got the message across. A slick production. Directed by Arthur Lubin, and produced by Walter Wanger. Sound, B&W, 21:21 Preventing the Spread of Disease (1940) Health film using interesting imagery and metaphors to impart lessons in hygiene. Sound, B&W, 10:47 Sniffles and Sneezes (1955) Children as carriers and victims of infections. Sound, B&W, 9:43 Unconditional Surrender (1956) This is a beautifully photographed and well preserved film about the production of polio vaccine in 1955-56 at an Ely Lily plant. Sound, B&W, 14:17 Ulcer at Work (1957) Excellent noir-type film about pressures facing a white-collar worker whose ulcer drives him to psychological extremes. Sound, B&W, 28:38 DVD Menu Sampler: DVD format and quality All of our DVD's sold are formatted NTSC, without region coding. This means that they will play on any NTSC DVD Player in the world. The standard in USA is NTSC. For those in Europe, your DVD player may be a PAL format, which will not work. For those overseas customers, please verify that your DVD player can play NTSC disks. Please note, that most of the films on our disks were made 40 years ago or more. Some perhaps as old as 80 or 90 years! As you can imagine, the movie making equipment of the time was a lot more primitive than the high tech equipment that they use today. Also, many of these films were stored improperly for decades before being digitally coded. As a result of this, these films are not what one would consider to be "DVD quality" today. Many, if not most, are black and white. The sound and picture quality is not perfect. There are those occasional "snap, crackle, and pops" across many of these films. We feel that these imperfections add to a film's charm, and provide for a more authentic viewing experience. WIth that in mind, this collection may not be for those wishing to find digitally remastered and professional recolored duplications of the original work in perfect DVD quality. I live in country ABC, will your DVD work in my DVD player? Short answer, probably. Long answer, it depends. There are two formats of DVD in the world. NTSC and PAL. NTSC is the standard for the US and I believe Japan, along with some other countries too. PAL is popular in Europe. If you have an NTSC DVD player (all USA customers), this disk will work for you. If you have a PAL player, this won't. Also, many commercial DVD's out there have region coding. Without getting in a long discussion on it, none of our DVD's have any region coding, so that won't be an issue. All you need to know is whether or not your DVD player is an NTSC format.
