Starting in the 19th century, the production of paper mache figure molds for sweets started in the Neustadt/Sonneberg area and can still be seen on display at the toy museum in Neustadt. A family affair, Carl Schaller was a trained embosser who created a company to start producing filling figures of paper mache in 1894. He created the molds while his family members painted them, and this tradition has continued on til today, to the fourth generation of the Schallers. The closely guarded process that the Ino Schaller family and only a few other artisans use takes approximately 7 days to complete a figure. On day one, the ingredients of paper, glue and other materials are mixed and then poured into a hand made two-part mold on day two. After drying and removal on the fourth day, they are further processed and painted to become the one-of-a-kind, hand-signed pieces. Their Santa figures are true folk art collectibles that will add a vintage charm and authenticity to your Christmas figure displays.
