Description: Condition: Never displayed, looks great, it was originally drawn by John Fountain!Title: INVADER ZIM Minigolf Concept JOHN FOUNTAIN SIGNED Hand Drawn Model Cel Art #IZOriginal concept art for an Invader Zim mini golf game, unproducedSize: 8.5" x 11"Year: 2001 SIGNED: John Fountain in 2023What is significant about these character sheets is their deceptive insignificance. When I was initially hired by Jhonen, Nickelodeon had not yet provided the show with its own stationary, which is why I created the laughably abbreviated ‘approval sheet’ you see on many of these designs - created to make the design pipeline as convenient as possible for Jhonen - who was not accustomed to keeping regular office hours. So, the ‘Check the box that applies’ header is in my handwriting and the system worked very efficiently. That is to say, lots of these designs are ‘side characters’ - but ‘Invader Zim’ didn’t HAVE ‘side characters’ because we ALWAYS created a backstory for them regardless of how insignificant they seemed.‘Zip’ had a lot of “crowd scenes” of people running in terror from a giant hamster or flying piggies - so we had to design a LOT of people to populate this unfortunate town. There were exactly three people who did character designs for ‘Invader Zim’ the actual tv show (as opposed to anyone who did designs for merchandise)… Jhonen Vasquez (the creator), Aaron Alexovich (design assistant for season one, lead designer season two) and myself - lead character designer. The task of populating a ‘world’ could be a tedious undertaking, but the three of us delighted in our tragic creations. Often, Aaron and I would exchange improvised storylines to go with each and every character from across the Nickelodeon cubicles we inhabited.‘Zim’ was significant for me, personally, because I had moved to Los Angeles with the expressed intent of being a character designer for animation, but early on I stumbled head first into storyboarding and then directing… so ‘Zim’ marks the ONLY show wherein I actually ‘fulfilled my dream’ of being a character designer.Media: Hand drawn in graphite pencil and signed, series model cel.Any page with Zim present on the left side at 1/3 sizing is copyType: Art by John FountainJohn Fountain is known for his work on My Life as a Teenage Robot (2002), South Park: Bigger, Longer & Uncut (1999) and Yin Yang Yo!
