Description: Antique Hudson River Oil Painting on canvas (1 of 2) Signed J Rufsell, which research suggests is J Russell. The signature appears to be very similar to that of John Russell 1745 - 1806. In looking at the background details of some John Russell paintings, the style seems to match or is very similar. I am not an expert or even novice in researching 18th and 19th century English artists nor the Hudson River School. However, a quick internet search suggests Russell did visit the east coast of the United States. The canvas is old. It appears they may have been put onto new stretcher bars many years ago. However even so, the current bars and nails appear to be very old. There are stretcher bar marks. It could use either restretching, tightening and conservation and restoration. I believe the current stretcher bars can be retained. The painting can be displayed as-is, but will appear loose at angles and close-up. Still, I believe you can greatly appreciate this painting if you are a fan of the Hudson River School style art. They come with contemporary frames in an antique style. There are a few chips to the frames but overall display very well. Please see images for details. The signature nor any areas of paint fluoresced for me other than what may appear to be dirt specks. Size: Canvas: 20 x 30 inchesFrame: 27.5 x 37.5 inchesFairly heavy frameAge: I believe these are 19th century or earlier, but I am not an expert in that art.
