Description: Here's an unusual and rare watch, it's an early 1970's Jaeger LeCoultre HPG Memovox in 14K Gold with a mechanical alarm. HPG refers to High Precision Guarantee and this model is referred to by collectors as the HPG Egg. The Egg was originally sold as a men's watch but at 37mm width and 41mm lug-to-lug it would definitely make an elegant statement for a woman looking for a unique and bold look. Employing JLC’s unique twin-crown system and alarm mechanism, the Memovox employs a hammer that strikes against a post welded to the back of the case back creating one of the most iconic models of post-War watchmaking. Not many models with the Calibre 916 were produced, and fewer with a precious metal case. It needs some TLC to get it back to its former glory but would be a superb addition to a vintage collection. · The solid 14K gold case and back shows wear and there are a few small dinks on the left-hand side, but it will polish up and could be refinished back to factory standard. 14K gold is perfect for watches with c.58% pure gold content and harder wearing and more scratch resistant than 18K. · The dial and hands are in very good, clean condition. · The glass (perspex/acrylic) is scuffed but polywatch could deal with the worst of it. There's an edge crack between 12 and 1 o'clock so a replacement should be considered as part of any full restoration. · One of the signed pushers is missing. · The lower pusher won't pull out to adjust the time. · JLC in-house Calibre 916 automatic movement with date and Memovox alarm function. · The Calibre 916 automatic movement is working and been keeping time but will require a service and lubrication as it's been untouched for many years. · 19mm between the lugs Please check the photos carefully and don't hesitate to ask for more. I'm not a JLC watch expert but happy to answer any questions as best I can. I'm selling this as for parts or restoration but in the right hands it won't take a lot to get it back to being a highly functional and cool 70's timepiece to make a bold statement and present the new owner with a solid future investment. I’ve seen fully restored models commanding strong prices approaching the £4,000 mark. This may also be of interest to any watch parts brokers that may be out there: the watch weighs 65g in its entirety so I estimate that the gold value is somewhere between £1,200 and £1,500 for scrap value alone plus the value of the dial, hands, and a functioning 916 movement. The Memovox continues to be an under-appreciated watch from a proper manufacturer, and this version with its quirky 1970's vibe might just be one of horology's better kept secrets!
