Description: JAMES DEWEY WATSON (born 1928) earned a PhD in Zoology from Indiana University (1950). Working with English researcher Francis Crick and others, he proposed the double helix configuration of DNA (1953). In 1962, Watson shared with Crick and Maurice Wilkins the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine “for their discoveries concerning the molecular structure of nucleic acids and its significance for information transfer in living material.” Watson became Director of the Cold Springs Harbor Laboratory in New York in 1968, helping to make it a premier research institution. He was appointed to head the Human Genome Project of the National Institute of Health in 1988. In his usual, very tiny handwriting, has signed the front of a postcard, adding the date Jany. 5, 1977.
