Description: Kazan by James Oliver Curwood. Second state binding of the first edition. Indianapolis, Indiana: The Bobbs Merrill Company (1914). The Volume has small spots on the covers and some light wear on the edges, there is also a previous owner bookplate on the front paste-down (see pic), otherwise the volume is in good plus condition. All the pages are present and are clean. The frontispiece and all 4 internal illustrated B&W plates (opposite pages 22, 116, 134, and 152) are present. The hinges and binding are tight. Curwood's 9th novel was first published in the UK by Cassell & Company on February 5, 1914. About 5 weeks later on March 14, 1914, the first U.S. edition was published by The Bobbs Merrill Company. There are three different states of the first U.S. edition binding, all three are bound in a rust cloth with an embossed scene of wolves chasing prey on the front cover and spine. The first two states list only Gayle Hoskins as the illustrator on the title page, one with gilt lettering on the cover and one with cream lettering on the cover. The third state has both Gayle Hoskins and Frank B. Hoffman listed as illustrators on the title page. Media Mail shipping included in the purchase price. Shipping outside the U.S.A. at cost.
