Description: Jean-Louis Ernest Meissonier (1815-1891) was a French painter and sculptor who achieved such acclaim during his lifetime that a street in Paris was named after him. His son, Jean Charles Meissonier, was also an artist of some renown. Ernest Meissonier painted primarily military-themed images, such as the print offered here, which shows several horsemen being served refreshments while still mounted. Meissonier was also known for the details that he included in his works, such as the two dogs in the lower right-hand corner having a bit of a sniff session. The etching is plate-signed in the lower left corner of the image, "E. Meissonier 1860" and by the etcher, P. LeRat, in print below the image to the right. Below the image in the lower right hand corner it is pencil-signed "Meissonier, 1860". Many prints after Meissonier's paintings/drawings are pencil signed by both the painter and the printmaker. In this case, the only signature is "Meissonier". Interestingly, I have been unable to find another example of this print through an online search. This print is from my personal collection which I am beginning to sell off. Unless noted otherwise in the description, the prints, art and other items that I sell are not "reproductions". Please check my other listings for additional items of interest. I will combine shipping.
