Offered for sale is a copy of Jonathan Franzen's Strong Motion--in a handsome vintage paperback edition from Norton, the first printing from that publisher, signed, inscribed, and dated. The inscription, to "Joan and Ken," by "your friend-- Jon," was executed in June 1994, at Swarthmore, the author's alma mater, where he served--briefly, unhappily, and off the tenure track--as an instructor. The spine bears a few light creases, but Joan and Ken left no annotations, underscores, &c. The upper right-hand corner of the front cover is slightly bumped and creased. Throughout, the leaves are modestly toned; the interiors of the covers are, alas, heavily toned. The glue at the front hinge, being old, is a little tender, but it will endure with careful handling. The signature long antedating the publication of The Corrections, this is a very desirable copy; I'm an old Franzen-Head myself and will be sorry to see it go.
