ITEM DESCRIPTION: Here is an Absolutely Gorgeous & Extremely Rare Antique Late 19th Century Circa Early-Mid 1890’s Chine Collé Sepia-toned Etching of a Very Charming Genre Scene of the Famous French Emperor Showing His Paternal Side titled “Napoleon and his Son” (AKA “Napoléon et son Fils”), after the 1844 painting by the well known listed artist ‘Karl/Carl August Baron von Steuben’ (German, 1788-1856). The publisher info, ‘Published by Fishel, Adler & Schwartz, New York.’ [American Publishers, c1852-c1915], appears printed very tiny upper left in the plate margin area just above the image, and the artist info, ‘Painted by Steuben’, appears printed lower left in the outer plate margin area just beneath the image, the title appears printed lower right, and ‘Etched by G. Mercier’ (Gustave Mercier, French-American, 1858-1898), appears printed lower right respectively. “Less than four months after his divorce Napoleon married again (April, 1810). Indeed, it was for that purpose the divorce had been arranged. His second union was purely political. He wanted a son and he wanted to ally himself with one of the ancient royal houses of Europe. He negotiated with both Russia and Austria, and as the Russian court seemed not sufficiently eager for the match, he selected the young Austrian princess, Marie Louise. After the wedding he learned to care for Marie Louise very tenderly. He told his friends he was only now learning to live; and when their infant son was born, though that birth had been the goal of all his plans, he gave the doctors express orders to devote their care rather to the mother than to the child and to be sure first that she was safe. On this boy he lavished a warm affection. He made a kingdom for the child in Italy, so that the baby's title was "King of Rome." When Napoleon fell, he twice abdicated in favor of his son, and the boy is known to French history as Napoleon II. But the Powers would not consent to his reign, and he and his mother, Marie Louise, were given a home by her Austrian kinsfolk in Vienna, where the lad was brought up as the Duke of Reichstadt. Such was the fear Napoleon had inspired that his son’s growth was watched with anxiety by many nations; but he proved a sickly boy who dreamed of following in his father's footsteps, but never had the strength or opportunity. He died of consumption when twenty-one.” (Source: The Story of The Greatest Nations with One Thousand of the World’s Famous Events Portrayed in Word and Picture, by Edward Sylvester Ellis, Charles Francis Horne, Vol. 5, 1913) The Etching is on a nice heavy-weight beige/cream-colored wove paper stock with platemark, and is in Excellent Rare+ condition for its antique age. This piece has been in a drawer amongst other lithos & prints since it was purchased by the Meibohm family and hasn’t seen the light of day in all this time and is as ‘Mint’ as any collector could hope to find in its original never-framed condition. There is some toning-burn on the back of the piece from lying on top of another print for so long but it doesn’t show through to the front. The size with very wide margins is 27-1/8” x 18-9/16”, Image size is 10-1/8” x 7-5/8”. No damage at all in the image area. There are only two small outer margin edge tears which don’t come anywhere even close to the plate margin area and are completely negligible since the outer margins can easily be trimmed off or matted & framed out, and they are both repaired from behind with archival tape for protection, and the tears are as follows; 1-5/8” tear on right edge lower-right; and 5/8”tear on bottom edge middle-left. Minimal & very slight small creasing here & there in the outer margin areas, along a few outer margin edges, as well as slight creasing in the outer margin corners—also negligible. Slight surface paper scrape/rubwear on the lower left outer margin area and a few outer margin dents & dings here & there—also negligible. Extremely minimal & slight tiny foxing specks here & there in the outer margin areas which are barely visible (none in image area)—also not really worth mentioning. Some outer margin edge wear with some dents & dings here & there—also negligible. Some normal toning of stock from age—negligible too. This gorgeous antique late 19th century etching would make a wonderful addition to any French, world history or world militaria art collection. We normally ship within 2 business days of cleared payment, but PLEASE NOTE: Please allow extra delivery time for your item(s) to clear all Customs Houses (U.S. and Abroad-typical delivery time about 14 business days +/-). We also would need a VALID INTERNATIONAL ADDRESS to 'Ship To'. ***IMPORTANT NOTE*** Customs charges/fees & duty taxes are based on the final value amount of the item(s) that we are required by U.S. law to declare on Customs Forms before shipping the item. Under U.S. law we are unable to mark a smaller amount or to declare the item a gift, sample, or anything other than merchandise prints/paintings etc, so PLEASE DO NOT ASK. We are a respectable business & must transact our auctions honestly & by the law. We would be liable and would get in trouble if there were any complications. The value marked on the Customs form will be the final auction price for any or all prints/paintings & will not include shipping. Most items will be shipped rolled in a Heavy-Duty Tube to save on shipping costs. Some may be shipped flat/hardpacked at our discretion. Note: Some Combined Rates may be higher due to Combined Weight changes or Oversized (OS1) dimensions, for items such as: Framed items, multiple paintings on canvas, oversized items etc. Please wait until we email you an appropriate invoice reflecting the discount for any multiple item auction wins before you pay via PayPal, or you can email us for an invoice after auction end. We normally ship items within 2 business days of receiving cleared payment. Please Note: Our gallery is closed Sundays & Mondays. We make every effort to pack artwork securely and carefully as per the items’ specifications. Due to the Antique/Vintage nature of MOST of our items, at our discretion we ship items flat or in heavy-duty tubes and they are securely & safely packed with each item wrapped in packing paper or archival glassine, then secured in between oversized cardboard or rolled in a heavy duty tube, then bubble-wrap is added, as per the item's specifications. EMAILING US: eBayers, at all costs, please use eBay's email system only (no outside email addresses) to contact us with any questions you may have. eBay's email system GUARANTEES we get your email and more importantly, that you get ours. A lot of servers in the last few years have started using newer SPAM filters, and there have been a lot of problems with GOOD emails not getting through correctly, and being returned as undeliverable. We have had numerous problems in the past communicating with our eBayers outside of eBay because of it. COLLECTORS & DEALERS: Please DO NOT email us (inside or outside of eBay's email system) with any offers to stop an auction early. It would not be fair to the rest of the eBay Worldwide community if we did that. THE HIGHEST BIDDER -OR- HIGHEST OFFER WINS IT!!!!! Thank you from the Staff at Meibohm Fine Arts, GOOD LUCK & HAPPY BIDDING!!!
