A Subtlety (also known as the Marvelous Sugar Baby and subtitled an Homage to the unpaid and overworked Artisans who have refined our Sweet tastes from the cane fields to the Kitchens of the New World on the Occasion of the demolition of the Domino Sugar Refining Plant) is a 2014 piece of installation art by American artist Kara Walker. A Subtlety was dominated by its central piece, a white sculpture depicting a woman with African features in the shape of a sphinx, but also included fifteen other sculptures. These fifteen "attendants" to the sphinx were enlarged versions of contemporary blackamoor figurines. The piece was installed in the Domino Sugar Refinery in the Williamsburg neighborhood of Brooklyn, New York, from May through July 2014. Although thematically consistent with Walker's earlier work, its scope and presentation were departures from her oeuvre. The project was commissioned by Creative Time and underwritten by New York-based real estate development company Two Trees, and was built with donated materials. The exhibition sparked conversations about the show's audience, the gentrification of Brooklyn, and the work's themes of race, sexuality, oppression, labor, and the ephemeral.Artist Kara Walker depicts imagined scenes that address racial prejudice, sexual tension, and the history and legacy of slavery in the American South. Snared is one such powerful work by the artist and is typical of both the antebellum iconography and ambiguous, violent undertones that define Walker's signature silhouette images.A leading contemporary artist and MacArthur genius grant recipient, Kara Walker re-examines archetypes from American history which continue to shape the structures of modern culture, and the mechanisms of power under which these images were produced and consumed. Using an incisive command of form and starkly contrasting shades of black, gray and white, the artist investigates the prevailing legacies of violence, racism, sexism and imperialism that manifest themselves so openly within the daily American experience. Walker's work spans multiple media including drawing, painting, sculpture, film, printing techniques, and the cut paper silhouettes for which she is best known. Engaging the experience of the nineteenth century panorama, Walker creates narrative arcs that travel from the trans-Atlantic slave trade to the contemporary moment. Her powerful and provocative images interrogate America's historical memory with tropes that are both comfortably familiar and unsettling. These sites of inquiry offer space for contemplation without predetermined resolution. SELECT RECENT SOLO EXHIBITIONS: 2023 'Kara Walker: Cut to the Quick' (From the Collections of Jordan D.
