Description: This amazingly dramatic shield was made either by the Amarro or Arussi tribe of Ethiopia or possibly Sudan. These are typically made from tough animal hides like hippos over many days. It is very heavily made with the hide 3/8" thick and weighing 8 lbs. 6 oz. The shield is 29" in diameter and is very close to round in shape. It is about 6-7" in depth. It has wear around the edges. The handle and harness used by the tribesman / warrior is intact on the reverse of the shield, aside from a bite mark? on the handle possibly from an animal. It would make an unbelievable visual impact on a wall or in any room (and has in our livingroom!). I think it dates to c. 1920.
