Description: An antique Japanese hand carved wood advertising sign for a shop that sold "Shoyu" (soy sauce) It's one piece of solid zelkova hard wood. ("Keyaki" in Japanese) This a wood known for its durability and the beauty of its wood grain. The writing is carved into the wood with the central kanjis coated with powdered gold mixed with lacquer. (Makie) On the right side (as we're looking at the photo) it says, this is a "Brewery for Kikuichi shoyu"The large center kanji is the character for "Kikuichi" The name of the soy sauce. The left side, "Sold by Ichihhara (Probably the owners name) merchandising store" It's 35 3/4 inches wide, 23 3/4 inches high, 7/8 inches thick and weighs 14 3/4 pounds. (It's a dense, hard wood) The two vertical brackets in the back are a common idea with Japanese wood signs. They're dove tailed in and help maintain the sign as a flat surface.
