Description: Delaware curators and serious collectors: a great opportunity to acquire a sui generis portrait study by native son Howard Scroeder. Interest in this Delaware painter has blown up rapidly since his passing in 1995. This is watercolor and I believe it is mixed media as there may be some oil pastel also. It's such a wonderfully mysterious composition! One is not given context and the work itself floats between portraiture and abstraction. What is the occasion of this gathering of three? My first inclination is it may be theater people. Is the figure at left actually on a cellphone or is that a strange contemporary illusion? Perhaps they are unwrapping chopsticks? The center figure almost looks like Lenin. Are we in Asia or are these costumes? The delicious way he goes full abstraction in the upper left quadrant is wonderful. It's just one of those pieces that really pushes boundaries of genre! This is rather large, especially for a watercolor. This measures approximately 32.5 x 26 inches (frame). You can Google this artist and read about his strong collector base and the hugely successful auction of a large body of his work a few years back. It's quite interesting to see the full range of his painting and it's wonderful to see elsewhere his depictions of the Delaware shoreline. He clearly loved his state and its natural beauty!
