His parents were the painters Christine and Sigurd Swane, so growing up was naturally marked by both art and an interest in nature. In his first works from the 1930s, a strict simplification of the motifs prevails, with an emphasis on composition and well-defined color surfaces. From the 1940s, a more colouristic concrete style emerges, with free compositions and broader brushwork. Lars Swane was deeply fascinated by the nature of reflections, as they, as reflections of the painting's motif, are in a certain way more real than the motif itself.
