Description: Reproductions of the murals created by Diego Rivera in the National Palace of Mexico, with descriptions in English and Spanish. The site where the National Palace now stands, was formerly occupied by the Palace of Moctezuma which was destroyed and burned in 1521 by Hernan Cortez. The present building dates from 1693 and was terminated in 1890. This building was the official seat of the Spanish Viceroys up to the year 1810 and housed the offices of Mexico's first president, Don Guadalupe Victoria; and to date all the presidents have continued to occupy the executive offices. Benito Juarez lived here up to 1872, the year in which he died from natural causes. The fourth floor of the Palace was added on in 1927 during the Presidency of Plutarco Elias Calles. Alberto Pani was secretary of the secretary of the treasury. It was during this period that Diego Rivera began his great masterpiece which up to now has occupied him for more than 25 years - having began the work in 1929. The National Palace covers an area of four quadrangles or city blocks. There are 14 patios and the garden. This garden evokes the shades of Moctezuma and the empress Carlota, who appeared upon the scene more than three centuries after the downfall of the Aztec emperors.
