Description: In the 1970's the Chilean dictatorship decided to murder an outspoken critic, former Ambassador to the United States, Orlando Letelier. DINA, the Chilean intelligence service, put together a conspiracy to arrange and carry out a car bombing using anti-Castro Cubans living in Northern New Jersey. Ricardo des Cespedes was a member of the conspiracy with other Cuban immigrants and one American, Michael Vernon Townley. When meeting the conspirators went to the Bottom of the Barrel, a bar in Union City New Jersey. This lighter, with a hand etched thunderbolt was used to let conspirators know they were there to plan the hit. It was eventually carried out and Letelier and Ronni Kapen Moffit were killed in a car bombing on embassy row in Washington. The bombing came to be known as the "thunderbolt conspiracy." It was given to me personally by des Cespedes who later became a witness against the bombers. I was working as an author and journalist and was contacted by the prosecutors because they felt my reporting on Chile put me in danger. That is how I met de Cespedes, who had been placed in witness protection in Delaware. I will include copies of articles and books that Chris I led the conspiracy.
