LILLIE "THE JERSEY LILY" LANGTRY - PICTURE POST CARD SIGNED - HFSID 156179 LILLIE LANGTRY Signed b/w British Rotary Photograph Series picture post card of actress Lillie Langtry from the knees up in a gown and fringed shawl and wearing a pearl necklace Picture Postcard signed: "Lillie Langtry". B/w, 3½x5½, overall, 3¼x5 image, one surface. Addressed by Langtry on verso to: "Lillie Reasa/5 Birmingham Rd/Nottingham." British Rotary Photograph Series picture post card. Captioned: "Mrs. Lantry". Actress and courtesan Langtry (1853-1929, born Emilie Charlotte Le Breton on the Isle of Jersey, United Kingdom) was the original international beauty of her time, admired by men and envied by women. She was the first of Edward VII's mistresses to ever be publicly acknowledged in society. A popular woman of the theatre, she was not a great actress but her fame led her to be one of the world's first women millionaires and one of the most photographed women in the world. In America, Judge Roy Bean, the "Law West of the Pecos", admired Lillie from afar and named Langtry, Texas after his beloved Lillie Langtry. He had painted in big letters across the front of his Langtry saloon: "The Jersey Lilly". The name, although misspelled, was in honor of the actress who was born on the island of Jersey in the Channel Islands. Signature light but legible. Lightly creased and soiled at blank margins on front and verso. Overall, fine condition.
