Description: Limoges 4 B&B Plates Mavaleix Granger Old Abbey Encrusted Gold Cream 1922-1938 Beautiful Set of 4 Smooth Rim BREAD AND BUTTER PLATES 6 1/8" manufactured by Mavaleix-Granger & decorated by OLD ABBEY (J. Granger) from Limoges, France w/Encrusted GOLD on cream and white, circa 1922-1938 DESCRIPTION: This unique set of plates was produced with the encrusted gold band on the rim adjoining the wide cream band. At the verge, the color changes to the high white of the porcelain with a single gold stripe at the verge. The design looks so classical. This is truly an eye-catching set of 4 decorative bread and butter plates. These make a beautiful set of display plates or they could be used daily. CONDITION: While this set is classified as used, the condition is superb. There are no chips, nicks, cracks, rubbings, scratches or hairlines. There are no utensil marks & no wear to the gold. DIMENSIONS: The plates have a diameter of 6 1/8" with a height of 5/8". HISTORY/MARKS: Paul Maurice Mavaleix worked with Henri Balleroy and Mandavy from 1901-1908. At some point in 1908, he established his own porcelain manufacturing pottery, PM de M, in Limoges, France. After World War I and about 1920, J. Granger became a partner and the name changed to Mavaleix Granger for 1922-1938. Latrille Freres was founded in 1899 by the father of the Latrille brothers and was located in an old abbey which was converted to a porcelain manufacturing facility. J. Granger is noted to have been associated with the company from 1908-1913. From 1908-1914, Mavaleix was in business by himself. About 1920 (after WWI), Granger bought the Mavaleix business and used a different version of the Old Abbey mark. Mary Frances Gaston’s Collector’s Encyclopedia of Limoges Porcelain 3rd Edition cites the green Granger mark #1 as used in the 1922-1938 time period and the Granger black & gold mark #3 as also used 1922-1938 as Old Abbey Limoges, This sets the circa as 1922-1938. The plates also have the mark for importer J.L. Hudson Co. of Detroit, Michigan. English born, Joseph Lowthian Hudson, after working for C.R. Mabley, who was successfully operating the largest men and boy’s store in Detroit, opened his own store in 1881. He established a shop that specialized in men’s and boy’s clothing inside the Detroit Opera House. Incorporating as the J.L. Hudson Company, the store added other lines of goods, including women’s clothing and housewares, and Hudson began to employ sale professionals to work the storeroom floor. Hudson's Department Store operated in Detroit for close to a century and was one of the largest department stores in the USA both in sales and building size.
