Deaf View Image Art, abbreviated as De'VIA, is a genre of visual art that intentionally represents the Deaf experience and Deaf culture. Although De'VIA works have been created throughout history, the term was first defined and recognized as an art genre in 1989. The De'VIA Manifesto outlines the major criteria of De'VIA works. According to the manifesto and its signatories, De'VIA work is: - representative of Deaf experiences - uses specific artistic strategies such as color contrast and centralized focus - generally within the field of visual fine arts and alternative media - not exclusive to Deaf artists and not inclusive of all Deaf artists. De’VIA is created when the artist intends to express their Deaf experience through visual art. Deafened or hearing artists may also create De’VIA, if the intention is to create work that is born of their Deaf experience (a possible example would be a hearing child of Deaf parents). De'VIA art most often includes a centralized focus, with exaggeration or emphasis on facial features, especially eyes, mouths, ears, and hands. Artist statement: DISCOVERY By Ixchel 'Jazmín' Solís García (Mexican, b. 1971) My name is Ixchel Solís García and my pseudonym is "The Jasmine". I'm originally from Tlalpan, District Federal and I was born one day in May 1971. I am a Plastic Artist, wife and mother of two beauties. Children and there is a detail of my person which I consider most important: I am deep deaf from my Birth. The story of my life is similar to that of almost all the deaf: the exhaustive work, the therapies of Language, communication difficulties and loneliness. The games and activities of a normal girl were replaced by school activities. Rigorous and strict, always oriented to the acquisition of an oral language that was almost Impossible to understand. This is how much of the first years of my life went by and due to the Tired of 17 years of work, I decided not to study high school. When I was already a teenager, I was very concerned about the creative, about the craftsmanship. In compensation for my lack of verbal communication tools, I learned that drawing, the Painting, engraving and sculpture functioned as a means of contact with the world. It was like this How an odyssey began that has not yet ended: the Plastic Arts. Much of this concern was instilled by a very dear aunt of mine, my mother's sister. She It led me through the paths of aesthetics and the visual arts. From those lessons, from the Trips, from visits to exhibitions and museums, and to the hours of coexistence with her, she was born in me, by End, the firm conviction of becoming a Plastic Artist. In 1989 and thanks to the goodwill of several people, I entered the National School of Plastic Arts of the UNAM as a special student, since at that time I still didn't count on my Preparatory education. I was admitted, although the term was somewhat inappropriate, as a student "Listener" and I had the great opportunity to meet, work and learn from several important people.... During that time my aunt died and that event had consequences on my work; on the other hand On the other hand, my life continued to pass normally with my family, my colleagues Painters and my brother's friends. It was until July 1999 that I attended with my family, an event that to date I remember with pleasure and some nostalgia: the theatrical presentation of a series of works performed by Deaf actors from the United States. That was the first day I had contact, although brief and sublime, with the world of Seña and Verbo, with its members and its collaborators. Thanks to Seña y Verbo I also had the opportunity to meet members of the Enséñame group, to Interpreters and sign teachers. All of them had knowledge of my work, although for those Dates, my plastic production was not yet focused on the field of signs. One day, my husband received a phone call from Teach Me. It had been contemplated the Possibility of my participation in a selection contest organized by the University of Gallaudet in the United States, in order to hold a very important congress: Deaf Way. I worked for several weeks on many ideas. I wasn't sure what kind of work would be the most Suitable for such a valuable event. One of the most important requirements, to have more Possibilities of selection, was that the conceptual and iconographic content of the works, represented The life of the deaf, their customs, their language, their experiences in the listening world. I then decided to make several paintings and some drawings in which Sign Language Mexicans, was the "protagonist". I deposited in those works all my passion, my love, my tear, my desires. When I finally finished The works, I sent photographs of the works, a resume and a brief description of my work. Fortunately for me, after several months of long and distressing waiting, I received news from Gallaudet. After a rigorous selection, we were chosen 60, out of 600 plastic artists from all over the World. Later, among those 60 artists, they selected only 4 people who deserved - at the discretion Of the jury - an individual sample of his work, given the originality and complexity of his work. Among those 4 artists was my name. In July 2002, the exhibition entitled "Delicate Sound of Silence" was inaugurated at the Institute Mexican of Culture, in the city of Washington DC, within the artistic activities of the Deaf Way II Congress. The University of Gallaudet acquired 5 of my works. My work was liked by many people of different Points of the planet and the satisfaction I felt is not over yet. In April 2003, I was invited again. To exhibit my work, but this time inside the gallery of the Washburn Art Building, inside the Gallaudet campus. Facing Worlds was the title of this new individual exhibition. Precisely in This month, I finished my high school, thanks to a unique knowledge exam convened by the SEP. Until a few weeks ago I received an email from a good friend, where she lets me know that My works are placed right in the presidential office of Gallaudet and especially one of them "Three Stages of my Life - Three stages of my life" is right on the back of the desk of the President King Jordan. Currently, I am producing works that concentrate their conceptual theme in my Experiences as a deaf person. I have always been a person who likes to have challenges. Part of The achievements I have had, I owe them to Seña y Verbo, to its members, to its director and to their Closest collaborators.
