Description: Listed English Portrait Artist Robert John Swan (1888-1980) Signed, on lower right (under the frame), this Antique Portrait of NY/NJ businessman, Henry G. Atha (1868-1941). It is an Original Oil on Canvas from the late 1920's-1930's. Swan is best known for his portraiture work and this is a fine example. Henry Atha was the Director of Mutual Benefit Life Insurance as well as on the board of several Newark banks and just the kind of client that would commission a work from Swan. Atha is portrayed as very distinguished and professional, but not overbearing. He is wearing wire-rimmed, nose-pinch glasses and a cameo decorating his tie, quite fashionable for the time we are sure. 3 1/2" Wide Gilt Spandrel (a roughly triangular space, usually found in pairs, between the top/bottom of an arch and a rectangular frame) moulding, with a pebbled or dimpled finish, is included in this listing. We believe the frame is original to the piece.Canvas measures 20 X 24 and is in Fair to Good Antique condition with some water damage at bottom - mostly covered by the frame.Outside measure of the frame is 26 1/4 X 30 1/4 and is in Fair condition with flaking finish, especially along the bottom. It is structurally sound and can be filled and retouched (colored).Please carefully examine all images for condition.Shipping charge reflects Delivery Insurance.
