Description: LORD BYRON HEBREW MELODIES London: John Murray, 1815. First edition, first issue. [vi], 53, [3] pp. 8vo (8.5 x 5.25 in.), modern quarter tan calf, gilt spine title, marbled paper sides. This copy is the first edition, first issue, with the E4 signature being a two-page advertisement for the publisher John Murray that includes the four-line entry for Samuel Rogers's "Jacqueline" and six-line notice for Thomas Campbell's "The Selected Beauties of British Poetry" (as being "In the Press") present. See Randolph, Studies for a Byron Bibliography, p. 50. "As this page of advertisements is not a binder's insertion, but is a portion of the last sheet of the book, it is fully entitled to recognition" (Wise, A Byron Library, p. 47). Possibly lacking the half-title (the leaf following the Contents is present and may be the actual half-title -- see photo). Without the inserted sets of half title and title pages for use in binding editions of Byron's poems into two volumes (not applicable here). Otherwise collates according to Wise and Randolph. Some leaves with parts of the "11 Smith 1814" watermark (fly-title shows "1815" watermark). Randoph reads it as "H Smith," while Wise calls it "11 Smith." Condition: Near fine/very good, clean copy overall: shadow of offset on the title page and a couple of tiny spots on a few leaves; head and tail of spine lightly rubbed.
