L'AMOUR - TYPED LETTER SIGNED 10/24/1973 - HFSID 156679 LOUIS D. L'AMOUR The Western novelist sends a letter regarding his short stories, beautifully framed to an overall size of 31¾x22¾ Typed Letter Signed: "Louis L'Amour". One page. 8x10½. Los Angeles, California. Dated October 24, 1973. To Mr. Mathisen. In Full: "So far my short stories have not been published in book form. We have talked of it somewhat but will get around to it eventually. I have just returned from NY setting up a deal whereby the Saturday Review Press will publish two of my westerns each year in hard-cover, and later they will go back and publish the list that has already been on the market, for collectors and libraries. Your comment on the Scandinavian is well-taken. I do have a few here and there. The girl in KEY-LOCK MAN was definitely Scandinavian and of good family. Also referred to in the book is the Danish archeologist, Christian Jurgenson Thomsen, one of the very first who used scientific methods. If you will recall, most of my stories took place or take place before the greatest number of Scandinavians arrived in the west. Very few, (there were some, of course,) came during the cattle days. Brigham Young recruited many of them, most of whom had become Mormons before leaving Europe, and they were west at an early period. However, the greater number came later when there was land to settle upon. I write mostly of the cattle and mining days. There was a scattering of Scandinavians then, one of them an outlaw named Martin M'Rose, near El Paso. But the earliest men who ventured west were largely Irish, English and Scotch of the second or third generation who grew up in the border states. By that I mean those bordering on the west. A great number of the gunfighters came from Iowa, Illinois, Missouri, Arkansas, Tennessee and Kentucky. And then, most of the Scandinavians who came were very solid citizens with no nonsense about them, and such men are like happy countries: they have no history. A man who works hard all day, goes to church on Sunday and tends to his own affairs rarely gets into trouble, and trouble is what we write about. There were definitely some. A good friend of mine, now dead, was Chris Madsen, a Dane. He served seven years in the French Foreign Legion after a year or so in the Danish army, then to America where he joined the Fifth Cavalry and fought Indians, and then he became a Deputy U.S. Marshal and helped wipe out the Doolin-Dalton gang. I came from North Dakota where a large percentage of the people are Scandinavian, and I worked in the mines with many, also in the lumber woods and at sea. I worked the lumber schooners on the west coast a couple of times, and the crews are seventy percent Swedish or Norwegian, with an occasional Finn, but they are another breed entirely. I was in Banff a couple of weeks ago, but just to make a short talk and come home."  L'Amour's novel, The Key-Lock Man, mentioned in this letter, was published by Bantam Books in 1965. Prolific author Louis D. L'Amour (1908-1988), born Louis Dearborn LaMoore in Jamestown, North Dakota, is best known for his Westerns, especially his 40-book saga of the Sackett family. The first of this incredible fiction epic was The Daybreakers (1960). The series eventually encompassed four centuries of the family's history. He also published Hondo in 1953, which was turned into a film starring John Wayne the next year. Wayne has been quoted saying that the novel was his favorite Western. In the 1970s, L'Amour expanded his Sackett series to include the chronicles of the Talon and Chantry families. He signed a 30-year contract with Bantam Books that not only gave him financial independence but also committed him to a discipline of writing three books a year. The author, who was known for his passion for travel and researching his books firsthand, published his first novel Westward the Tide in England in 1953. The book was not published in the U.S. until Bantam Books obtained the rights many years later. L'Amour began his writing career with a book of poetry (1939) before writing short stories for pulp magazines. The author received the National Gold Medal from Congress (1983) and was honored by President Reagan with the Medal of Freedom (1984) for his contributions to American literature. Over the course of L'Amour's career, he wrote 100 novels and over 250 short stories. Lightly creased with folds, light vertical creases at the "mour". ½-inch separation at blank right margin at lower horizontal fold. Staple holes at upper left blank corner. Otherwise, fine condition.
