Description: Description: An original early 19th c engraving by Luigi Rossini (1790-1857), a Roman artist and printer who specialized in view (veduta) of Rome for the Grand Tour trade. This engraving, titled "Veduta della rovina del fran Arco trionfale della nave traversa ove รจ la Confessione di S. Paolo fuori le mura." is a bit of contemporary reportage, depicting the aftermath of the fire which destroyed the Basilica of St Paul's Outside the Walls on 15 July 1823. The Basilica was -until that point- the best-preserved and most original of the Constantinian basilicas. Size: Sheet is 26.5" X 21.75" (roughly); image is 22.5" X 19". Mark: Signed in lower left "Rossini dis e inc" dated "Roma 1823" in lower right Condition: Some foxing to top border, overall toning to image from glue applied to back in prior framing. Damage along edges of sheet from a careless removal when it was reframed sometime in the past. Shipping weight is 4.0 lbs.
