Description: Luigi Rossini (1790-1857) “Veduta degl' Avanzi del secondo piano delle Terme Diocleziane” Roma 1823 Original Etching Luigi Rossini was born in Ravenna Italy and studied art at the Academy of Bologna. He is famous for his etchings depicting the Roman architectural heritage of Rome, of which this is a listed example. He was deeply influenced by the works of Piranesi. Image: 520 x 470. Plate: 535 x 480. Sheet: 550 x 500, Avery large etching printed on a white/off white heavyweight wove paper. The Baths of Diocletian were the largest of the public baths and were capable of accommodating 3,000 bathers at the same time. The tepidarium and the central hall are now the church of S. Maria degli Angeli, a side hall is the church of S. Bernardo. Lower right of image reads Roma 1823 and to the left the folio number T. 17. On the left beneath image inscribed Rossini dis-e inc. In the centre titled as above. In common with many of these large early etchings this has been trimmed close to the platemark, but not on the platemark leaving the best part of a centimetre between platemark and sheet edge, thus will mount well if that is desired. Condition considering 200 years old is superb with no foxing, tears, damage or creasing. My photos are taken in natural daylight. I do not digitally enhance images. I try to ensure what you se is what you get. Paper is both robust and pliable thus only optimum means of mailing will be rolled in a secure postal tube. Just expanding on my comments above re margin size. There is another example of the etching available for sale from a private dealer currently - available to view online. It has wider margins. As above the margins on this impression are much narrower having been trimmed at sometime in the past. Luckily the person trimming it has left sufficient free paper between the plate mark and the edge of the sheet to allow it to be mounted with a reasonable, albeit narrow gap showing the complete plate mark on all sides. It is price discounted against the other example accordingly.
