Jung, out-of-print hardcoversDisclaimer: Feel free to link to this content in your online listings and auctions. If you copy, distribute, or use any part of it, make sure to cite this source. I am a purveyor of and specialist in Carl Jung books. The following is for informational purposes only. I will continue to research and expand on this work. Read on…This specific title by Carl Jung “Man and his Symbols” in out-of-print hardcover is currently underpriced in the market by a significant margin. It may be one of the most collectible books produced after 1964, for its content, the author, and its production cost having large thick boards, cloth cover, and heavy paper with around 500 illustrations, many in color. This fact has not yet become apparent in the antiquarian community.Older printings of this book, between 1964 and 1972, were very costly to publish as the paper used was much thicker and resulted in a large and heavy format. Inside the book, there are also hundreds of illustrations, mostly in full color which added to the production cost, especially in the 60s, and 70s. Coupled with the high-quality materials used for the cloth cover, the current prices on Amazon are barely enough to cover the material of the book alone, let alone the priceless content within. The first printing in 1964 from our extensive research is the large format red brick hardcover with red color sleeve. The copyright page of this hardcover has printed “© 1964 Aldus Books Limited, London.” This is the true first printing. It should be noted that there were two sleeve designs that were introduced in 1964 for the US and UK separately. The US version received the red color sleeve with black cross. This design was actually a picture painted by a child and patient of Carl Jung. He explains this in one of his books. The UK version received the white sleeve with mandala design on the front. The binding of the red sleeve prominently displays the name of the publisher “Doubleday” in red color. On the inside rear of the sleeve, the text displayed shows the heading “Forthcoming titles” with two book titles by the publisher listed underneath, Man and Time by J.B. Priestly, which was published in 1964, and The Jews in Their Land by David Ben-Gurion published in 1966. Since the first title Man and Time was introduced here as forthcoming in 1964, it is indisputable that this book and sleeve were printed earlier in the year of 1964.Also in 1964, was the same Holland large format hardcover, but with a newly redesigned white sleeve (which was to remain as such for all successive printings) with a large prominent picture of Jung filling the reverse side of the sleeve. On the copyright page, this printing shows the text “First published in 1964 by Aldus Books Limited.”. On the inside rear flap, there are the same two titles promoted by the publisher as “forthcoming titles.” These are the same titles displayed in the red sleeve, one to be published in 1964 and the other in 1966. On the binding of the sleeve, the publisher of the sleeve design “Aldus” is prominently printed in red and black. For both of these printings, the same hardcover printed in Holland was used, albeit the copyright pages are slightly different. Both are hard to find and valuable.PRICE GUIDE: (Updated 03/2023)US/Holland large format printing in red color sleeve and thick red brick hardcover with mini Jung portrait on rear inside flap of sleeve. (Book printed in Holland in 1964. First sleeve printed in UK.) - $300— $360* - Very few copies are available online - No ISBN - Rarity is 1% (rare: approx. 1 out of 100 books) - US printing is rarest and priced at top of range. UK printing is 2nd rarest.Yugoslavia large format printing in yellow/blue/orange/or brown cloth hardcover (1968–1972) - $180 — $240* - Still available online, but was costlier to print - With or without ISBN. Ones with no ISBN are better - Rarity is 8% (less common: approx 1 out of every 12.5 books)Yugoslavia smaller format printing in greenish-yellow cloth hardcover (1973+) - $100— $160* - Costlier to print than later Spain printings - With ISBN - Rarity is 15% (common: approx 1 out of every 7 books)Spain small format printing in brown hardcover (1973–1991) - $40 — $100* - Too many units printed. Many copies available online. - Sleeves with no barcode on bottom rear of sleeve are better. - Printed date always found on copyright page as last date in series - With ISBN - Rarity is 75% (very common: approx 1 out of every 1.35 books)BOOK RARITY:Rarity generally means the frequency or occurrence of a specific printing per 100 copies purchased randomly or available for sale online. If the rarity of a specific printing is 3% for example, that means you can expect to find or buy three (3) copies in every 100 available or purchased. However, my Rarity computation is not based on market availability alone. Over the past few years, I have assisted in the procurement of approximately 1,000 copies of this book for various entities. In many cases, the online retailers (e.g. Amazon) did not have photos or descriptions of the copy being sold. For us, the printing year, format, and condition of the book were truly random. The Rarity figure is partly based on the statistical results of this effort. Obviously, the rarer the copy is, the higher should be its market value. The price guide listed here is based partly on this rarity valuation and a range is always provided to account for book and sleeve condition.BOOK CONDITIONS:What you want to look for in these hardcover books is no signs of foxing, no staining on cloth hardcover, no bad odors, no water damage, and no weak hinges. Age toning is perfectly fine. Most importantly, no tears or cracks in the hinges! This hardcover book is heavy, and so if the hinges are weak, they’re going to eventually begin tearing. If the seller has not properly described a book’s condition, make sure to ask them about the hinges prior to buying.BOOK PRINTING YEARS:Also this book only comes in a first edition. A second edition was never made. It was printed almost every year between 1964 and about 1991. First (1st) printings, which are the most valuable, were printed in the UK, US, or Holland. Shortly thereafter, Readers Club versions were printed in Holland. If your book has a red sleeve and a thick reddish hardcover cloth, it is the Holland Readers Club printing, which is one of the most valuable. If your book sleeve bears a portrait of Carl Jung on the rear, and was printed in the UK, US, or Holland, it is arguably the most valuable printing, and should fetch the most in auction. If your book does not contain an ISBN number, and no later printing date, then it was surely printed before 1968. If an ISBN number is present, your copy was printed 1968 or later. And if you see a reprinted date, then that was the printing date. If there are multiple dates listed in succession, then your printing date is the highest date. For example, “Reprinted in 1968, 1969, 1970, 1971, 1972”, then your printing date is 1972.BOOK HARDCOVER FORMATS:The large format heavier books were printed between 1964 and 1972, and usually in Yugoslavia. In Yugoslavia, the smaller format was first adopted, but the cover was still the quality cloth fiber. From 1973 onward, the book was printed in Spain, and made a little thinner with smaller dimensions, mainly attributed to a thinner type of paper being used. The cover material was more sheet than cloth. I’ll update this with the exact material names later.BOOK DIMENSIONS:Large format (UK/US/Holland/Yugoslavia) printed between 1964 and 1972: 11" x 8.25" x 1.25"Smaller format (Yugoslavia) printed in 1973 and later: (will be updated soon)Recent small format printed between 1973 and 1991: 10.62” x 7.89” x 1.01”BOOK HARDCOVER COLORS:Red brick — large heavy format printed in UK, US, Holland Blue — large heavy format printed in Yugoslavia Yellow — large heavy format printed in Yugoslavia Orange — large heavy format printed in Yugoslavia Greenish/Yellow — smaller format, cloth cover printed in Yugoslavia Brown — smaller format more recently printed in SpainASTERISKS:*Ranges depend on year printed, condition of book, and condition of sleeve. Torn/cracked hinges, foxing, or stains will decrease value of book significantly.**Pricing is in part based on regular monitoring of supply on eBay, Amazon, and other top-selling book sites over the past 3 years.***More information to follow here in the days to come. Will also add dimensions for the early, heavier hardcover, and the later, smaller and thinner format. Will provide more detailed pricing based on condition. And will dig up any other printing locations as well as refined printing dates. From URL: https://jung-reader.medium.com/price-guide-for-man-and-his-symbols-1964-by-carl-jung-f04f52d8a3b2
