During the 1870's Winchester was enjoying success with a line of lever action repeaters for medium power cartridges. While they didn't have the power of the big single shot rifles they offered repeating rifle firepower and opened a market Marlin wanted to enter. John Marlin's stature had led a number of outstanding inventors to join him in New Haven . This team developed the Marlin Model 1881 a rugged repeating lever rifle first offered in .45/70 Govt. It was the most powerful repeating rifle made and an instant success. In the West where the game was big and often dangerous hunters demanded it. The U.S. Army had introduced and adopted the .45/70 in 1873 for its single shot "trap door" Springfield rifle. Shooting a 500-grain lead bullet the cartridge was very powerful for its time and rivaled the heavier single shots. By combining .45/70 power with repeating rifle fire power Marlin produced an outstanding combination for a ready market. Marlin FireArms Company MANUALS FOR OLD MARLINS - Marlin Catalogs from 1882 through 1915 contained operation manuals for guns including cutaway drawings and component parts pictures.
