Description: Mary Whyte (b 1953) is one of America's most accomplished contemporary watercolor painters. She is a traditionalist and prefers a representational style. Whyte is the author of seven books and has learned numerous awards for her works, including the Portrait Society of America's Gold Medal and South Carolina's Governor's Award for the Arts, the state's highest honor for an artist. Her watercolor portraits are exhibited in museums throughout the United States and internationally and her works are found in corporate, university, private, and museum collections. It is based on a ten-year stay on a South Carolina barrier island where, by accident, she. met Alfreda LaBord and her group of African American senior citizens who gathered weekly to quilt and socialize in an abandoned church. Descended from slaves, they were longtime Gullah residents of the area. These women welcomed Whyte to their community. Alfreda's World, chronicles in dialogue and images (watercolors and drawings) the evolution and deepening friendship between Whyte and Alfreda over a ten-year period and Whyte's encounter with the Gullah culture.
