Description: Condition: Very Good ++. 1st Edition 1916. Born in England in 1878, John Masefield was Poet Laureate from 1930 until 1967. As a young man he took a passage to New York and lived there from 1895-97, discovering a love of poetry. Back in England, his first published poem appeared in a periodical in 1899, and in this formative period as a writer he was mentored by W B Yeats. From 1913, Heinemann published Masefield's work in the UK and in the USA his publisher was Macmillan, New York. 'Good Friday and Other Poems' is particularly interesting because it was published by Macmillan in the USA to coincide with a highly acclaimed lecture tour Masefield undertook to the United States from January-March 1916, designed by the British government to help cement relations with the USA during WW1 and encourage them to support the allied cause. The US entered WW1 in April 1917, and it can be argued that this volume of poetry played some (small) part in that decision. Masefield made a second lecture tour in 1918. These visits, and the publication of 'Good Friday and Other Poems', greatly enhanced his reputation as a poet and dramatist on the other side of the Atlantic. This is a lovely copy of the US first edition, first issue, published February 1916, right in the middle of the author's first lecture tour. pp131 + 4 pages at end listing Masefield's work published by Macmillan, 19 by 13cms. Condition: Very Good ++, no jacket, in original maroon buckram with bright gilt lettering to spine and front board, and top edge gilt. Virtually no shelf wear, corners barely bumped, hinges tight, no inscriptions but front free endpaper bears a small sticker 'The Old Corner Book Store Inc, Boston, Mass.' Endpapers slightly grubby and age-toned, pages clean and unmarked and only marginally browned at edges, no foxing, fore edges uncut. Overall a delight to handle and a very fine example of this title.
