Description: Matson Lines, SS LURLINE Dinner MENU "A God Appears" Eugene Savage 1951 13.75 x 10.5 inches. Fair - Used. Upper edge has light yellowing - corner bumped. See images. Eugene Savage was an American painter and academic most well-known for his mural paintings. In 1938, he was commissioned by Matson Navigation Co to paint Hawaiian themed murals for their ships. He completed the murals in 1940 but they were never installed because the ships had been converted to WWII troopships. His original murals remained in storage until they were unveiled in 2014 by the Honolulu Museum of Art. His art deco paintings romanticized Hawaii as an exotic locale. The bold, vibrant colors capture a spirit of celebration and hospitality.See my other auctions of art deco, architectural history books, rare photography books, Chicago history and more!!!
