Michael Chabon was born in 1963 in Washington, D.C. He spent a year studying at Carnegie Mellon University before transferring to the University of Pittsburgh from which he graduated in 1984. Subsequently he received a MFA in creative writing from the University of California, Irvine. His parents divorced when he was 11, and he grew up in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania and Columbia, Maryland, where he lived nine months a year with his mother and he described his situation as being in "a progressive planned living community in which racial, economic, and religious diversity were actively foster." He grew up hearing Yiddish spoken by his mother's parents and siblings. His first novel, THE MYSTERIES OF PITTSBURGH, was written as his UC Irvine master's thesis. His professor, Donald Heiney (better known by his pen name, MacDonald Harris), sent it to a literary agent, who got the author an impressive $155,000 advance. It became a bestseller, instantly catapulting Chabon to literary celebrity. Chabon said that his literary influences were Donald Berthelme, Jorge Luis Borges, Gabriel Garcia Marquez, Raymond Chandler, John Updike, Philip Roth, and F. Scott Fitzgerald. His second novel was WONDER BOYS. Shortly after completing WONDER BOYS, Chabon discovered a box of comic books from his childhood, which reawakened an interest in comics, coupled with memories of the "lore" his Brooklyn-born father had told him about the "middle years of the twentieth century in America . . . the radio shows politicians, movies, music, and athletes of that era," with inspired him to work on his novel, THE AMAZING ADVENTURES OF KAVALIER & CLAY, a novel that charts the adolescent lives of Sammy Klay and Joe Kavalier, two Jewish cousins who create a wildly popular series of comic books in the 1940s. The novel became a New York Times Best Seller and eventually won the 2001 Pulitzer Prize for Fiction. Chabon has been a staunch defender of genre fiction and his novel THE YIDDISH POLICEMEN'S UNION won five genre awards. Chabon has clearly become one of the best, most famous, most important, and most collectible fiction writers in the world. The Virginia Quarterly Review states: " . . . [Michael Chabon is] one of the most celebrated writers of his generation . . . ." Chabon's first novel, THE MYSTERIES OF PITTSBURGH, was published when he was 25 years old and catapulted him to literary celebrity. He followed it with a second novel, WONDER BOYS, and two short-story collections. In 2000, Chabon published THE AMAZING ADVENTURES OF KAVALIER & CLAY, a critically acclaimed novel that John Leonard, in a 2007 review of a later novel, called Chabon's magnum opus. It received the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction in 2001. His famous novel, THE YIDDISH POLICEMEN'S UNION, an alternate history mystery novel was published in 2007 to enthusiastic reviews and won the Hugo, Sidewise, Nebula, and Ignotus Awards. Chabon's work is characterized by complex language, the frequent use of metaphor along with recurring themes, including nostalgia, divorce, abandonment, fatherhood, and issues of Jewish identity. He is the author of such great and famous books as THE MYSTERIES OF PITTSBURGH, A MODEL WORLD AND OTHER STORIES, WONDER BOYS, WEREWOLVES IN THEIR YOUTH, THE AMAZING ADVENTURES OF KAVALIER & CLAY, SUMMERLAND, THE FINAL SOLUTION, THE YIDDISH POLICEMEN’S UNION (offered here), and several more. It is quite clear that Michael Chabon is one of the best, most famous, most important, and most collectible genre authors in the world. From the dust jacket: “ . . . FROM THE ACCLAIMED AUTHOR OF THE PULITZER PRICE WINNER THE AMAZING ADVENTURES OF KAVALIER & CLAY COMES AN EQUALLY DAZZLING ORIGINAL AND IMAGINATIVE WORK OF FICTION . . . For sixty years, Jewish refugees and their descendants have prospered in the Federal District of Sitka, a ‘temporary’ safe haven created in the wake of revelations of the Holocaust and the shocking 1948 collapse of the fledgling state of Israel. Proud, grateful, and longing to be American, the Jews of the Sitka District have created their own little world in the Alaskan panhandle, a vibrant, gritty, soulful, and complex frontier city that moves to the music of Yiddish. For sixty years they have been left alone, neglected and half-forgotten in a backwater of history. Now the District is set to revert to Alaskan control, and their dream is coming to an end: once again the tides of history threaten to sweep them up and carry them off into the unknown . . . But homicide detective Meyer Landsman of the District Police has enough problems without worrying about the upcoming Reversion. His life is a shambles, his marriage a wreck, his career a disaster. He and his half-Tlingit partner, Berko Shemets, can’t catch a break in any of their outstanding cases. Landsman’s new supervisor is the love of his life -- and also his worst nightmare. And in the cheap hotel where he has washed up, someone has just committed a murder -- right under Landsman’s nose. Out of habit, obligation, and a mysterious sense that it somehow offers him a shot at redeeming himself, Landsman begins to investigate the killing of his neighbor, a former chess prodigy. But when word comes down from on high that the case is to be dropped immediately, Landsman soon finds himself contending with all the powerful forces of faith, obsession, hopefulness, evil, and salvation that are his heritage -- and with the unfinished business of his marriage to Bina Gelbfish, the one person who understands his darkest fears . . . At once a gripping whodunit, a love story, an homage to 1940’s noir, and an exploration of the mysteries of exile and redemption, THE YIDDISH POLICEMEN’S UNION is a novel only Michael Chabon could have written . . . “ SIGNED BY MICHAEL CHABON ON THE COLOPHON PAGE. From the rear panel of the dust jacket: Praise for the work of Michael Chabon: “A prose magician, Chabon is that rare literary anomaly: a gentle-spirited writer of boundless ambition.” -- The Village Voice on THE FINAL SOLUTION. “Absolutely Gosh-Wow, Super-Colossal-Smart. Funny and a continual pleasure to read.” Washington Post Book World on THE AMAZING ADVENTURES OF KAVALIER & CLAY. “The depth of Chabon’s thought, his sharp language, his inventiveness, and his ambition make this a novel of towering achievement.” -- New York Times Book Review in THE AMAZING ADVENTURES OF KAVALIER & CLAY. “A towering, swashbuckling thrill of a book.” -- Newsweek on THE AMAZING ADVENTURES OF KAVALIER & CLAY. “Chabon is a flat-out wonderful writer -- evocative and inventive. Pointed and poignant.” -- Chicago Tribune on WONDER BOYS. SIGNED BY MICHAEL CHABON ON THE COLOPHON PAGE. ________________________________________________________________________________ I grade books and dust jackets: fine, near fine, very good, good, fair, and poor. I describe all faults. If you sell books on EBAY (or anywhere else), it is de rigueur not to list 1st printings of book club books as 1st editions (unless they ARE the 1st edition, which occurs only occasionally); also, a 1st edition, 7th printing, is not a 1st edition. Ex-library books must be noted as such since generally they are of little value to the collector of 1st editions. Condition is also very important to those collectors. Books and dust jackets must be described in detail. In other words, it is incumbent upon the SELLER to know what is and is not a 1st edition. Mistakes can be made (and corrected), of course, but if you DON'T KNOW, don't try to sell a book as a 1st edition. ___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ CONDITION: A FINE book in a FINE dust jacket. The book is tight and square in its white quarter-boards and black-boards binding with the correct black endpapers. There is no writing in the book (except for Michael Chabon's signature); no bookplates; no remainder marks (important in that this book often shows up with a remainder mark, even the signed, limited, boxed edition). The dust jacket is NOT price-clipped and shows the correct 1st issue price of $26.95. There are no chips or tears or wrinkles to the dust jacket. SIGNED BY MICHAEL CHABON ON THE COLOPHON PAGE. The great and iconic and fantastic full-wraparound dust jacket artwork by Will Staehle. This is an unusual copy of THE YIDDISH POLICEMEN'S UNION in that this seems to be an unread FINE copy of the book in a FINE dust jacket. Usually the dust jacket for copies of this book are worn and torn, largely due to the fragile nature of the materials made to produce the dust jacket. A MUST FOR THE COLLECTOR OF IMPORTANT MODERN SCIENCE FICTION/MYSTERY 1st EDITIONS AND/OR THE COLLECTOR OF AWARD WINNING SCIENCE FICTION/MYSTERY 1st EDITIONS AND/OR THE COLLECTOR OF MICHAEL CHABON 1st EDITIONS! ___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Additional photos are available upon request. I am continuing to list some of my best books (especially science fiction, fantasy, and horror 1st editions) on EBAY not so much as auctions (due to the fact that EBAY charges quite a bit to list items for reserve auctions), but more along the lines of listing my “catalogue” of books that I have for sale. I'm not going to “give” these books away, but my opening bids and Buy-It-Now prices are usually a fair amount below market value. Furthermore, however, for certain scarce books in great condition, I do expect to get close to what they’re worth. Stay with me; I always have a number of important, collectible, cornerstone science fiction, fantasy, and horror 1st editions listed. Many thanks! All items are being offered for sale elsewhere; I reserve the right to end this listing early if this item sells elsewhere. __________________________________________________________________________________ Note: I own the following two books: Leckie, Anne. ANCILLARY JUSTICE. Subterranean Press, 2014. 1st limited edition. (#2/500). Leckie, Anne. ANCILLARY MERCY. Subterranean Press, 2016. 1st limited edition. (#2/500). I am looking for: Leckie, Anne. ANCILLARY SWORD. Subterranean Press, 2015. 1st limited edition. (#2/500). I would like to round out this set by acquiring the #2/500 copy of ANCILLARY SWORD. If anyone has this copy and is willing to sell it on EBAY, I would be highly interested in obtaining it so that all my copies would have matching numbers. Many thanks. __________________________________________________________________________________ Contact me if you’re looking for a particular title or titles. I have thousands of books for sale that may or may not show up in my EBAY listings. I am happy to set up flexible PAYMENT and/or HOLD PLANS for any book(s) that you bid on and win.

Please note: if you want something other than USPS Media Mail shipping, you must wait for me to send you an EBAY invoice or if you are a buyer outside of the United States, you must wait for me to send you an EBAY invoice. See my other auctions on EBAY for excellent science fiction, fantasy, and horror 1st editions (and a few other items). I specialize in science fiction, fantasy, and horror 1st editions: award winners, cornerstone books, and generally recognized important books in the genre(s). I GUARANTEE THE CONDITION OF THIS BOOK; IF YOU DON'T LIKE IT, SEND IT BACK! If you prefer payment methods other than PayPal (as I do), I am happy to arrange for a different payment method for you. Before you buy from others, check out their return policies and their guarantees and compare them to mine. I stand behind all of my items FULLY. Why deal with a seller who won’t guarantee their books, doesn’t have a return policy, or doesn’t correctly describe the edition or condition of their book(s)?
