After years on the road doing art shows and fairs and perfecting his technique, Lewis developed a style that is uniquely his own. Lewis taught school on the Navajo reservation at Dinnehotso and Lukachukai and at Maricopa, Clarkdale, Camp Verde, and Roll. Continually experimenting with new colors, movement, contrast and light, Lewis created a unique style in landscape and figure painting. While he created works on paper using watercolor and gouache, in his later years, Lewis concentrated on painting in oil and developed a unique graphic look in his later works.
