Description: Offered by Over The Blue Horizon is a vintage (1974) Famous Airplanes of the World (FAOW) Blue Cover volume – difficult to obtain and long out-of-print – featuring the Imperial Japanese Navy MITSUBISHI A6M ZERO Models 52 to 63. The FAOW series began publication in the late 1960s and are highly illustrated monographs focusing on a specific aircraft or family of aircraft. Text is in Japanese, but the photographs, scale line drawings, cut-away drawings, cockpit diagrams, close-up detail drawings and profiles transcend the written word and continue to appeal to advanced modelers. The formats and covers have slightly changed over the years. Originally, the FAOW covers were white and beginning in 1971, changed to Blue. In 1979, the FAOW covers changed to a Chart background, and then in 1986, changed to the current Black Cover series. Note that this FAOW is from the older Blue cover series The Allies' main opponent in the Pacific air war, the ZERO is the most famous symbol of Japanese air power during World War II. The fighter first flew in April 1939, and almost 11,000 Zeros were produced from 1940-1945. The ZERO got its name from its official designation, Navy Type Zero Carrier-Based Fighter (or REISEN), though the Allies code-named it ZEKE. In the early part of the war, Allied aircraft such as the Curtiss P-40 were at a distinct disadvantage in a dogfight with a ZERO flown by a skilled pilot, and the ZERO quickly became a feared opponent. The Japanese advantage, however, began to disappear as American tactics evolved and improved, and improved aircraft were introduced. The A6M5 became operational in late 1943, and was numerically, the most important version of the ZERO. This 58 page, 7.25 x 10.25 inch softcover, published in 1974, provides exceptional coverage of the later-model ZEROs and as stated earlier, is difficult to obtain even in Japan. Condition is GOOD/GOOD+ with moderate shelf wear to the covers.
