Jean-Jacques Waltz (23 February 1873 - 10 June 1851), also known as "Oncle Hansi" was a French artist of Alsatian origin. He was a staunch pro-French activist, and is famous for his cute drawings, some of which contain harsh critiques of the Germans of the time. He was also a French hero of both World War I and World War II. The village in this book is not a made-up village - it really exists! It was the village where Jean-Jacques Waltz, known through his books and drawings as "Hansi," lived, and he loved the place more than any other on Earth. When he wrote "My Village", Alsace was occupied by Germany following the Franco-Prussian War, and Hansi used his skills as an illustrator to poke gentle fun at the German authorities. Hansi was given a heavy fine and a warning from the German authorities in Colmar. Soon after, he was sentenced to a year in prison for "insulting the German officer corps." Overall, the book is in Good- Condition. The boards have wear, discoloration, and stains. The spine is faded, and it is scuffed and fraying at the top and the bottom. The front board is loose and there is tape inside the front cover at the hinge, where a previous owner has taped it back together. The edges are scuffed and the corners are bumped and dented. There is a nameplate sticker on pasted on the front end page by a previous owner. Internally, there are 36 pages. There is wear and browning to the pages, particularly around the edges. Some nicks around the edges. The spine is loose and you can see the internal webbing from some of the pages. This is a great book with a lot of history, perfect for any collector! Some other dings here and there. Please email with questions and see my store for other great items. Inventory R-Box 64
