Description: Scarce, early, circa 1859 stereoview photo titled, "No. 204. - The Home of Washington, Mount Vernon." Photographer is William England of The London Stereoscopic Company (blind stamp at lower right). There is a black gentleman in the foreground sitting on a rock and a lady seated next to him. Another gentleman is standing nearby. This is one of the very early views of the mansion. According to Mount Vernon records, ship masts held up the piazza roof from 1850 until the piazza was rebuilt in 1860. The ship masts are seen in this image. Although it's numbered the same, this is a slightly different view from the hand-tinted one I'm also selling at this time. The black gentleman is standing in the other view. Nice deluxe back depicting a patriotic bald eagle and Union shield design with a nice description of Mount Vernon by Nathaniel Parker Willis (1806 - 1867) taken from his book American Scenery, Vol. 2, which was published circa 1840. Blue two cent "Proprietary" revenue stamp on reverse. William England (? - 1896) was a successful Victorian British photographer specializing in stereoview photographs. In 1859 he traveled to America for the London Stereoscopic Company and brought back a series of stereoviews of the U.S. and Canada which provided European audiences with some of their first stereoscopic views of North America.CONDITION: Very Good++ SIZE: Measures approximately 3 1/4 x 6 3/4 inches.
