Description: New & Unsmoked Ser Jacopo Picta Magritte 01 Spongia S3 Natural Sandblast This pipe is new and unsmoked. This is a new and unsmoked pipe from the Picta series celebrating the art of Rene Magritte. It is in the unstained S3 Spongia finish which has become quite rare. Most of the Spongia finish pipes seen these days are in the R2 Rustic finish. The grain of this pipe is quite a treat for the eyes and accents the unique lines of this most interesting Picta pipe. The tobacco chamber is as unstained as the outer bowl. The pipe has the "Magritte Birds" band in sterling silver and a handcut saddle stem. Left natural or unstained, it bears the Spongia S3 stamping (R2 Spongia is for unstained rustic pieces). There's a single nomenclature panels on either side of the bowl which frankly is full to bursting with the nomenclature.. Over time the bowl will darken naturally from being smoked and being handled. Giancarlo was an art student who became an artist with briar as his medium. To some degree the creation of this and the other three Picta series made him an art historian as well. The pipe will come with a booklet showcasing all the pieces of a Picta collection. The Spongia designation used by Ser Jacopo to designate that the briar is not stained but rather left in its natural color. They can come in the R2 (rustic) or S3 (sandblast) finishes. The S3 designation has always indicated an unfinished briar, so there are older Ser Jacopo S3 and R2 pipes which do not say Spongia. The older R2 pipes were stained with a light, often referred to as "natural" stain, but the older S3 pipes were not stained and left in their natural state. The pipe pictured is the pipe you will receive.Purchase is for the pipe only, no box and no sleeve. The stem of this pipe is handmade from Lucite / acrylic / plexiglas and will not tarnish. The pipe will be packed with the stem separated from the bowl for safety and shipped insured. This pipe DOES NOT use a filter. All pipes are shipped insured. I was the importer and distributor of Ser Jacopo Pipes in the USA from their founding in 1982 and for the succeeding 35+ years.
