To the delight of Sweetwater’s synthesists, you can expect just as much modulation mileage with their Desmodus Versio. On its surface, it’s an impressively versatile reverb, which would be more than enough to have one in your rack. Yet, dive in a bit further, and you’ll find that Desmodus is a powerful, multifaceted space and texture tool with ample room for experimentation. Delay, distortion, pitch-shifting, and transformative shimmers are accompanied by deep modulation options and Noise Engineering’s Versio stereo DSP platform, ensuring near-limitless customization and control.Harnessing space An essential element at the heart of this module’s design is the fact that it was never intended to specifically replicate certain types of reverbs or spaces. Instead, it prioritizes the reverb effect as one of many possible permutations of the module’s sonic architecture, and nearly every control point is responsible for multiple functions. For example, Tone is a bipolar parameter that serves as a filter for the reverb tank. At 12 o’clock, it’s disabled but functions as low and highpass filters when assigned to the left and right values, respectively. Each parameter is meticulously crafted for rich interoperative potential, whether manual control or CV, making these modules powerful, economically-sized forces to get so much more out of your rig. The spatial distribution of delay lines is managed with the Dense control, increasing in length as you move from left to right, providing a spectrum of possibilities that range from short-and-simple delay to smeared, cavernous reverbs. The reverb tank’s feedback is attenuated with the deceptively versatile Regen knob regardless of how you play it. As soon as you clear the noon position, your tail length becomes infinite with 100% feedback. Taking it beyond 3 o’clock causes your infinite space to be ducked by new inputs, resulting in an encompassing soundscape of swelling, undulating sidechain-style pulses.Attenuating time and texture Speed and Index parameters let you control the speed and amount of the internal LFO, respectively. The Index control is also bipolar, affecting the delay lines with random rates or sine waves when set to the left or right of the 12 o’clock position, which disables the LFO. Since Speed also attenuates the LFO, understanding how to manipulate the two in concert can yield exotic, temporally-jarring results. Or, you can choose to abandon time altogether with the FSU function, simultaneously maximizing the Regen’s control of tail length while muting any input to the reverb effect circuit from manually pressing the button or a high gate signal via CV. You’ll likely notice two different 3-way switches on the module, affecting aspects of timbre, pitch, and underlying modulation behavior. The top switch features Limit (LIM), Distort (DST), and Shimmer (SHM) settings. Alter the reverb style with a range of clean and saturated, distorted options, or go into banshee-esque pitch-shifting that supplements an octave back into the input. Next to the FSU button, you’ll find a 3-way switch to adjust the response of delay lines during modulation. Blend (BND) gives you a smooth crossfade, while Interpolate (LRP) and Jump (JMP) affect the change in length of delay lines from slow to fast, leading to audible, pitch-shifting elements that keep pace with their respective operating modes.World of Versio: endless open-source opportunity Noise Engineering’s unwavering commitment to owning and personalizing your experience doesn’t stop with the versatility and scope of its modules.
