Description: 1891 (Dated) Genuine Engraved Color MapNorth (53 counties) & South DakotaSatisfaction GuaranteedThis is an authentic 1891 map--NOT a recent reproduction This color map of North Dakota and South Dakota is dated 1891 on the face. It was engraved and printed by the Struthers & Company Engravers, New York, to accompany a set of reference material published in 1891 and 1896. Counties, County Seats, Cities; many Small Towns and Villages; Ports, Military Airfields and Forts; Rivers, Streams, and Lakes; and other topographical features are located on this map. Most of the state's railroads and all of the major railroads are shown in red. Indian Reservations are also located.North Dakota Counties on this map (53)Allred, Barnes, Benson, Billings, Bottineau, Bowman, Buford, Burleigh, Cass, Cavalier, Church, Dickey, Dunn, Eddy, Emmons, Flannery, Foster, Garfield, Grand Forks, Griggs, Hettinger, Kidder, La Moure, Logan, McHenry, McIntosh, McKenzie, McLean, Mercer, Morton, Mountraille, Nelson, Oliver, Pembina, Pierce, Ramsey, Ransom, Renville, Richland, Rolette, Sargent, Sheridan, Stark, Steele, Stevens, Stutsman, Towner, Traill, Wallace, Walsh, Ward, Wells, and Williams.South Dakota Counties on this map (48)Aurora, Beadle, Bon Homme, Boreman, Brookings, Brown, Brulé, Buffalo, Butte, Campbell, Charles Mix, Choteau, Clark, Clay, Codington, Custer, Davison, Day, Delano, Deuel, Dewey, Douglas, Edmunds, Ewing, Fall River, Faulk, Grant, Gregory, Hamlin, Hand, Hanson, Harding, Hughes, Hutchinson, Hyde, Jackson, Jerauld, Kingsbury, Lake, Lawrence, Lincoln, Lungenbeel, Lyman, McCook, McPherson, Marshall, Martin, Meade, Meyer, Miner, Minnehaha, Moody, Nowlin, Pennington, Potter, Pratt, Presho, Pyatt, Rinehart, Roberts, Sanborn, Schnasse, Scobey, Shannon, Spink, Sterling, Sully, Todd, Tripp, Turner, Union, Wagner, Walworth, Washabaugh, Washington, Yankton, Ziebach. The map is printed on a sheet of medium weight paper measuring 11 5/8" x 9 5/8", with a fold in the center (as issued). The bordered map area is about 10.5" x 8.25" with blank margins of between 1/2" to 1 inch all the way around to allow convenient matting. On the back of the map, as issued by the lithographer (not subsequently printed), there is a printed table containing "Area and State Population By Counties" data for the states, derived from the Eleventh Census (1890). County area (in square miles) is included, as well as population figures for each of the counties that were organized and officially recognized when the Eleventh Census was conducted. A sample of this table (from the Rhode Island map) is shown in one of the photos below. According to this map, the 1890 population of Burleigh County (Bismarck, ND) was 4,252, and the total state populations of North and South Dakota were 182,719, and 328,808, respectively. This is a very attractive older map and would look beautiful matted and framed. If you want a detailed map showing the state as it was over 130 years ago, this is a good one.The copyright date of "COPYRIGHT, 1891, by Dodd, Mead & Company." appears on the face of this map, just below the border in the lower-right corner. Please note: There are at least two different versions of this map that were produced by the same press and dated Copyright, 1891, so please look closely at each before purchasing. As far as I can tell, the main difference is the number of recognized North Dakota counties (see above for list) with boundaries printed on each rendition of the map. My best guess is that this version with 53 counties for North Dakota was published in the first issue of the map, and the version with 45 counties was a subsequent reissue, revised slightly and edited to update the Area and Population table, as well as the new county borders for the 1896 publishing of the associated reference text. There are also a few additional railroads on the other version. Both versions bear the 1891 copyright date on the face of the map. Please check my listings for other possible versions of this map. One of the delightful and interesting results of the engraving and ink transfer process in lithography is that there can be color variants of the maps which look distinct from each other, even though they were produced by the same engraved plates on the same press. This may be a result of additional passes by one color or another, subtle differences in the ink tone, varying pressure from the pressing of the plates, slight variation in the position of each color plate, or other choices made by the engravers or the printers. The result is that each map's appearance is truly unique.1) The first image shows the scanned map, cropped without its full margins. The full, blank margins are actually between 1/2" and 1" all the way around. This scan was created from the second issue of this map, so it contains eight fewer North Dakota counties than are on the map you will receive. Thus, I have also included a closeup from the map you will receive, to show some of the county boundaries that are different.2) The second image is a closeup of the area around Pierre, SD, to show the quality and detail of the engraving. Below: A closeup photo of this map, to show that it is the earlier issue, with 53 counties in North Dakota. Note that in this region of North Dakota, the counties of Buford, Flannery, Mountraille, Renville, Allred, Wallace, Garfield, Stevens, and Church are pictured. In the subsequently published reissue, this area belongs to Williams, Ward, McHenry, Billings, Stark, and McLean counties).Below: A sample (from the Rhode Island map) of the Area and Population by Counties table on the reverse of the map. This image is a sample only; the map in this listing has the relevant data for the states depicted on the map.The following copyright statement appears on the face of this map.
