Morris Birkbeck (1764 – 1825) was an English agricultural innovator, author/publicist, anti-slavery campaigner and early 19th-century pioneer in Southern Illinois. Birkbeck published Notes on a Journey in America from the Coast of Virginia to the Territory of Illinois (1817), first in Philadelphia, then in London, Dublin, and Cork. An account of the party's emigration travel experiences, with vague references to their plans for establishing a wilderness sanctuary, it became immensely popular, with its promise of improving the lives of downtrodden working and middle-class Europeans. Old owner bookplate. Mild wear to the leather tips and the spine ends are weakening. Some additional edge wear. Internally clean. The map has one small tear down the spine side where attached to the binding. See images.
