Description: This coin was purchased from one of Mel Fischer's lead diver, Kevin McKee (son of the famous Art McKee), personal collection over dinner with Mel Fischer, Jim Sinclair and Karen and Kevin McKee. This coin was certified in person and Jim Sinclair signed the certificate (with his raised seal) in front of the author. Jim Sinclair was the lead archaeologist on the original diving expedition and is now famous in his own right. This coin comes with a signed letter documenting the coins provenance and original raised seal certificate of authenticity has a unique provenance since this coin was purchased directly in front of Mel Fischer on March 27th, 1991 - prior to his finding the much larger deposit from the Atocha (the mother load). This coin's pedigree is that it came from a chest that was sold separate from the shipwreck (Treasure Salvor's, Inc.) and only a few of these documents remain as only those associated with Mel Fischer's team would be able to have or sell these. This coin is certified and documented as: Denomination: 2 RealesReign: Phillip IIIMint: PotosiAssayer: B (Extremely Rare: 1589 – 1615)Weight: 6.4Grade: One (1) The certificate is very unique - when brought down to Key West and shown to the Mel Fischer museum for appraisal, they were amazed and showed a similar (grade 2) coin from the B Assayer (a very rare coin indeed) retailing in their store at $8,900. They gave a verbal appraisal of well over $10,000 as this grade 1 coin has a brilliant shine and the greatest detail found of all the coins from the Atocha and includes the provenance and certificate document from Mel and Jim! Next I brought the coin down to Sherry Culpepper, Mel's lead diver on the wreck, who recognized the coin as one of the diver's coin. She noted that in her store, she would sell this coin for $11,000, but would pay $6,000 wholesale. So even if you had to get your money back, you could... THIS IS A RARE CHANCE TO OWN A PIECE OF HISTORY THAT TRUELY IS VERY RARE!
