It happened after the death(read murder) of emperor Probus, after a successful rebellion by Carus, that was the praetorian prefect. Carus died during the summer of 283 after a major victory against the Persians. At which point, Numerian became emperor as well, Carinus had been elevated in early 283. After a successful Roman retreat from Persia, Numerian died in November 284. Diocletian was chosen to replace him. ______________________________
