Description: Hand written illustrated nun manuscript journal from 1862.Dimensions: w 5.375" x h 7.125" This cloth covered hand-written journal appears to be written by S. Elizabeth, an Anglican Christian Nun (see page 1 photo where the words 'Anglican nun' are written faintly under S. Elizabeth's name. Sister Elizabeth chronicles her thoughts as a nun & even outlines an index. There are a several hand-colored ink illustrations a couple pasted-in graphic illustrations scattered throughout the indexed pages. (see photos for some examples). There is a lemon-shaped watermark on last page stating 'Masters 78 New Bow...' and it seems there is some embossing on the soft cover itself, though it's mostly covered with the fabric protection. Condition: Usual wear for a journal of this age. The hand-sewn & glued black fabric covering has fraying on edges and faded fabric at binding. There is heavy foxing on the back few pages. Otherwise the 269 pages are clearly written in beautiful cursive handwriting. This is a rare & unique insight into the thoughts & dedication to god that a religious nun has...very interesting read! What is an Anglican Nun?Anglicans consider themselves both Catholic and Protestant, as their practices, theology, and ecclesial structures are reformed versions of the early Catholic faith, but have also been influenced by the English Reformation.Anglican nuns are women who take vows of poverty, chastity, and obedience, and live within the Anglican Communion while following the traditions of religious life. They often wear a traditional habit, which may include a tunic, scapular, cowl, and veil. Anglican nuns may also sing Gregorian plainchant and reserve what they call "the Blessed Sacrament".
