Description: Denendrobium 1239 This is a peloric (means ‘Monster’) dendrobium. A mutant cloned so every one blooms like this. I don’t think you will see this elsewhere LIGHT: Most dendrobiums like bright diffuse light, though most can be acclimated to full sun. Your plant should have slightly lighter green leaves. If the leaves are very dark green your plant is not getting enough light to bloom well. WATER: Dendrobiums generally like to dry out between waterings. Adjust your watering schedule to the time of year and the growing location you've chosen. Keeping Dendrobiums indoors you should water them about once a week. We recommend putting the plant in the sink and let the water run through for about a minute. Let the plant drain in the sink before you put it back in your decorative container. If you have your plants outside the watering schedule depends on the season; in the hot summer plants need to be watered every other day, in spring and fall two waterings a week should do, and in winter reduce watering to once a week. Always water thoroughly and early enough in the day that the plant can dry off by evening. FERTILIZER: Dendrobiums are heavy feeders and require fertilizer about twice a month. We recommend feeding with any general purpose water soluble fertilizer in place of a watering. MEDIA: These plants are heavy rooted and do well in most coarse orchid mixes. We recommend a blend of equal parts Aliflor and charcoal, plus 10% coconut peat. REPOTTING: It is good practice to repot every two years. Do not over pot Dendrobiums, they like to stay tight in the pot. Give them just enough room for two years growth. DISEASE: Most plant diseases are caused by damp or stagnant conditions. Proper watering practices and good air movement are the best preventative measures you can take. To treat fungal diseases we recommend Physan or RD-20, Aliette, and Manzate or other brand of these chemical groups. Never use a copper base fungicide, as it will defoliate the plant. Against insects like scale, mealy bugs and spider mites most good pesticides that are labeled for plants will work on Dendrobiums. Powders and water based pesticides tend to be better to use than oil base pesticides. Spraying should be done after watering and during the cooler part of the day.
