The Oregon sunstone is a 6 mm princess cut square weighing 1.25 carats. The sunstone has a peach colour. The gem has been set in a four prong .925 sterling silver basket setting. The sunstone is natural, genuine and has had no treatments. The necklace includes an 18" sterling silver diamond cut cable chain, 1 mm thick, made in Italy, with a lobster claw clasp. Necklace arrives in a gift box. Sunstone has a hardness of 6 - 6.5 on Mohs' scale. Cable chains are formed by connecting single links perpendicularly end to end. The links in this cable chain have been diamond cut for added brilliance. Princess cut is a highly faceted square or rectangular cut stone, fairly similar to a brilliant cut. It is also called a 'square modified brilliant'. The profile or side-on shape is similar to that of an inverted pyramid with 4 beveled sides. When looked down on, it bears an X shape. Oregon sunstone range from water clear through pale yellow, soft pink through blood red to an extremely rare deep teal green. Some of the deeper colored gems have bands of varying colour while others exhibit pleochroism, showing different colours in different directions. Oregon sunstone gets it schiller or aventurescence from copper platelets. Many stones appear to be transparent at first, but when viewed in just the right direction, a pink to red metallic shimmer flashes through the stone. When viewed along their edges, the platelets are invisible to the naked eye; when viewed perpendicular to their surfaces, they reflect light simultaneously from each platelet, creating a mirror effect. Fine gemstones are extremely rare and put this variety of feldspar in the same class as the best the gem kingdom has to offer. Your browser does not support JavaScript. There are many sellers that have lost this translation and selling their artificial glass as the gem-quality sunstone found in Oregon, USA.In 2002, a new supply of sunstone entered the market from an origin that is still subject to debate. Described as originating from the Congo and later from Mongolia, is really a treated yellow labradorite from Mexico. When I was studying gemology, one of my fellow students discovered a strange pattern not typical of the Oregon sunstone specimen. Our teacher did indeed see this. He tested thousands of gems to find the differentiation between the two with an electron microscope. It was their work that brought to the forefront the false sunstone. It is falsely called Oregon sunstone but it is really Mongolian sunstone. It was a way to get between $119. - $462. per carat for sunstone. The regular labradorite prices range from $28. - $93. per carat, and even less for artificially treated material or opaque gemstones. The photos have been enlarged to show detail. I have pictured the necklace next to a dime for size reference. I use LED lighting in my photographs. I will include the gemstone description with the necklace. This is its provenance and should be kept with the necklace for future reference.11/2020 UPDATE: Mongolian sunstone sold as the equal of Oregon sunstone was first suspected to be man made in 2008. This material was first claimed to be from the Congo and then later claimed to be from Mongolia. Gemologist and geologists from different countries and laboratories have found the following facts based on their evidence: 1) The Mongolian sunstone is really an artificially copper-infused treated pale yellow feldspar; 2) The vast majority of the pale yellow feldspar starter material sold as Oregon sunstone came from the autonomous region in Inner Mongolia, China, not from Mexican labradorite; 3) Natural red-green andesine with copper platelets does exist and has been found in the lower Yu Lin Gu Valley, Tibet; 4) A small quantity of the Tibetan material is collected and sold by the locals, others venturing into Tibet must wear oxygen masks. The Tibetan stone is generally unattainable for the average consumer as it takes traveling to the source. If a consumer can obtain the Tibetan andesine, the only remaining question is how to properly insure you have the natural Tibetan stone and not the artificially treated Mongolian stone. It is still massive fraud to secretly sell treated feldspar to consumers as natural copper bearing andesine. Consumers can still have 100% confidence in Oregon sunstone as natural and untreated with its abundant copper schiller. After all, that is what they tried to replicate. The settings are .925 sterling silver and is the standard for silver. It is called .925 because it is an alloy that is 925 parts out of a thousand silver. It is allowed for the other 75 parts to be other metals (usually copper) to enhance the strength, because pure silver is very soft and not structurally strong enough for many jewelry applications. Other "silver settings" come with different elements in their composition. German/Nickel Silver, which is an alloy consisting of copper, zinc and nickel, contains no silver. Many people have allergic reactions to nickel. Other settings may be called Mexican Silver, Indian Silver, Montana Silver, Pewter, Tin, Pot or Base Metal or simply silver. The content of these are less clear and do not guarantee the quantity or silver content. .925 is the best form of silver. It is durable and has a high sheen. Sterling Silver is considered a precious metal. The earrings include titanium earring backs. Titanium is a chemical element with the symbol Ti and atomic number 22. It has a low density and is a strong, lustrous, corrosion-resistant (including sea water, aqua regia and chlorine) transitional metal with a silver colour. Titanium is as strong as some steels, but 45% lighter. The earring backs are easy to hold and easy to attach to the earring prong.Inside the gift box, I am including a 1" X 1" anti-tarnish tab. This is the same technology used by NASA, The Guggenheim Museum, The British Royal Mint & jewelry manufacturers worldwide. The tab provides protection from tarnish for up to 12 months. It does not leave deposits on items it protects. It is non-toxic, non-abrasive, and will not scratch or harm metals or gemstones. Place tabs in jewelry boxes, storage bags or boxes. Each tab protects up to 30 cubic inches of container space.I guarantee my jewelry 100%. If you are dissatisfied with your purchase, return your item and I will refund your purchase price.
