Description: An original antique copper-engraved print of 'A Javanese Man and Wooman'. Drawn to accompany J. Nieuhof's account of his travel in the east indies it is printed on hand laid paper and gives good insight into local custom and dress. Johan Nieuhof (1618-1672) was a Dutch traveller who wrote about his journeys to Brazil, China, India and the East Indies. His notes and illustrations were published in Dutch by Jacob van Meurs in 1665 and this English edition was published in 'Churchill's Voyages and Travels' (3rd edition 1744). The printed area measures approximately 175mm a 295mm with good sized margins beyond.Condition report: Good condition, light toning, closed tear to the left margin entering the printed area but without loss, several small holes in right margin well away from the printed area, some marginal soiling.
