Description: This original etching by Joseph Pennell (1857-1926) is signed in pencil lower right center. Also signed in plate above pencil signature. There is 1 foxing blemish top middle outside the plate line. This image was printed circa 1910 on a delicate laid paper. This etching technique learned and discussed with Whistler in detail meaning dark ink images fading to light ink as can be seen in the bridge and city background to the far right of the crane. Pennell explained in detail in his book Etchers and Etchings that Whistler said etchings should be how the eye perceives objects. One focuses on any image crystal clear and the peripheral surroundings are always a blur but obviously there. Paper size 10 1/2" x 16" and 9" x 13 1/2" from plate line to plate line. HM136
