The Office of Strategic Services (OSS) was a wartime intelligence agency of the United States during World War II, and a predecessor of the modern Central Intelligence Agency (CIA). The OSS was formed as an agency of the Joint Chiefs of Staff to coordinate espionage activities behind enemy lines for all branches of the United States Armed Forces. For the duration of World War II, the Office of Strategic Services was conducting multiple activities and missions, including collecting intelligence by spying, performing acts of sabotage, waging propaganda war, organizing and coordinating anti-Nazi resistance groups in Europe, and providing military training for anti-Japanese guerrilla movements in Asia This two DVD set contains the following movies: DVD #1 - OSS Training School This film shows the typical training routine of an OSS Field Agent. Possibly filmed at Site "B" in Catoctin Mountain Park, now the location of Camp David, it shows how agents were instructed in the use of Colt pistols and hand-to-hand mayhem. A final sequence shows the operatives testing their marksmanship skills in a Hogan's Alley-style shoot house inside a barn. (28 min.) - Sabotage: Perfecting the Art of Surprise A CIA produced short introduction to OSS sabotage and methods in WW2. (2 min) - The Small Firefly OSS Weapons film giving an in depth look at the Firefly, a time delayed incendiary grenade used specifically to attack vehicles and tanks. (8 min.) - Caccolube Another 'OSS weapons' feature on a sabotage device called Caccolube: it was a special abrasive powder that could be dropped into the crankcase to damage vehicle engines of any type. The film shows how Caccolube are used on captured Japanese vehicles. (4 min.) - Derailment In March 1944 the United States National Defense Resources Committee & OSS performed a number of experiments on the Claiborne-Polk military railroad to help determine the best way to derail trains. The results were presented in this film. The film discusses amount of explosive used, technique of making "gaps" in railroad track to overturn train and points out weak points to exploit. (8 min.) - The Mole The "Mole" was an explosive device designed to automatically detonate when light levels dropped, such as when a train entered a tunnel. This film shows how the Mole was made, as well as various tests to determine the most effective location to place the Mole. (7 min.) - Nassau Training Report Training Film on the training of OSS Maritime Unit personnel for underwater demolition at Salt Key, Nassau, in the Bahama Islands during World War II. Excellent production value, definitely to be of interest as this group was a predecessor to the Navy Frogmen program and SEALs.(9 min.) DVD #2 - Undercover Training This lengthy film takes a dramatized presentation to demonstrate the not insignificant preparation, mindset, arrival, establishment, and "prevalent cover" for secret agents by presenting one movie within another, as introduced by Col. Robertson, chief of Schools and Training. Very well presented and rather interesting look into the 1940's era tradecraft of spies. Directed by John Ford. (1 hr 1 min.) - Joan and Eleanor A sort of predecessor to the mobile telephone, this is an OSS film on a new agent radio transceiver system that allows field agents to more easily contact HQ surreptitiously via an orbiting aircraft. (18 min.) - Using the Lambertson Unit A silent film showing the operation, setup and use of the Lambertson diver rebreather used by agents to approach and attack ships and other targets while underwater. This innovative diving equipment was especially well suited for sabotage work as it had no exhaust bubbles that might reveal the agent. (8 min.)
